Zach Bush of Definitive Training Solutions: Be Harder to Kill

In a world where there are people out there who want to do harm, having the necessary training to stop a threat and not be a victim is crucial. Zach Bush of Definitive Training Solutions teaches people how to be harder to kill. While the training is not meant to go out and take advantage of people due to a particular set of skills, instead, it teaches good people how to do bad things to bad people if a life and death situation arises.

I’ve had the opportunity to interview Zach Bush and take some Tremis Dynamics classes with him and got some deep insights into some of the things he teaches, having a certain mindset, his preferred firearms for home defense, and much more. Don’t miss this interview with the owner of Definitive Training Solutions!

1. Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

Zach Bush (Definitive Training Solutions): My name is Zach Bush, and I am the owner and lead instructor of Definitive Training Solutions. In 2007, I became a police officer in Indiana and worked in a patrol capacity until 2019, when I became a school resource officer. From 2011-2017 I served in the United States Marine Corps as an infantry rifleman, achieving the rank of Corporal.

In 2012, I took my first commercial firearms training course and immediately realized the shortcomings of my police and military training as it related to carrying a gun every day. It was at this point that I began on my journey of making myself harder to kill. This included firearms training, trauma medical training, fitness training, and martial arts.

After nearly a decade of consistent training as a student, I started Definitive Training Solutions to offer the lessons and tactics that I learned to our students.

2. What type of training is offered by Definitive Training Solutions?

Zach Bush (Definitive Training Solutions): Definitive Training Solutions offers courses in pistol, rifle, shotgun, and martial arts-based combatives.

While each course type is different in subject matter, what sets Definitive Training Solutions apart from other training companies is our ability to pressure test our techniques in our courses. We utilize force-on-force munitions for most of our courses, as we feel this is the best way to accurately test what you know or learned in class.

3. Can Definitive Training Solutions teach throughout the US so long as there is someone to host the training?

Zach Bush (Definitive Training Solutions): Absolutely!

We are always looking for new ranges and new locations to host our classes. We will need either an outdoor/indoor range for the live fire classes and a private space for our non-live fire classes, such as our combatives offerings. We enjoy traveling to teach our classes, and we hope that it creates a better environment for our past or present students to take our coursework.

In addition to this, we offer free Definitive Training Solutions classes to our range host and/or the individual that sets up our training location. Bonus points if it’s near a good Mexican/BBQ restaurant.

For more inquiries on this, please email [email protected].

4. Did I hear Definitive Training Solutions offers free training to anyone who carries a firearm while working in a school?

Zach Bush (Definitive Training Solutions): Yes, you heard correctly. Definitive Training Solutions offers free class tuition to any person who carries a firearm while working in any public or private school. Any class location. Any class. Absolutely free. All the individual has to do is show up with proof of employment in a school, the required gear, and they get to train at no cost.

This is not just a Definitive Training Solutions policy, it’s personal. For the past five years, I have been a School Resource Officer, and this is a way to give back to the education community. There is nothing more important than protecting those students, most of which are not allowed or able to protect themselves.

If interested in this offer, please email [email protected].

5. How important is it not only to learn to be proficient with your firearm(s) but also to utilize force-on-force as well as combatives?

Zach Bush (Definitive Training Solutions): Being proficient with combatives training is just as important as being proficient with firearms and is exactly the reason Definitive Training Solutions offers both. In fact, most of our Definitive Training Solutions courses blend traditional firearms training with combatives as it relates to that discipline of shooting.

zach bush

The biggest reason training both is important is that the probability of using your combatives/martial arts training to win your fight is as high or even higher than the chance of using a firearm to win.

In regard to force-on-force training with man-marking munitions, this is the best way to validate techniques taught in live-fire courses. Definitive Training Solutions uses force-on-force munitions to “test” what works and what doesn’t. At Definitive Training Solutions, we would rather you find out what doesn’t work in training, rather than your real-life test.

6. I know you’re a shotgun guy. The buzz these days seem to be with ARs. What would you tell people who are on the fence between buying one or the other?

Zach Bush (Definitive Training Solutions): If someone is debating which to buy, I would say buy both a shotgun and an AR. They are different and have different aspects that require specific training for each firearm.

If someone can only purchase one or the other, they should buy an AR. This may be a bit of a shock to those reading this who know me personally, but the AR has more application variety.

That being said, nothing matches the lethality of a 12ga shotgun, which is why owning and training with a shotgun (such as with our shotgun classes at Definitive Training Solutions) is vitally important for anyone that values the true meaning of the Second Amendment.

7. What would you tell people who think someone will save them when danger occurs?

Zach Bush (Definitive Training Solutions): I would tell those people to really think about and assess who typically would come to help you in a violent situation. In most places, this burden falls on law enforcement.

Depending on your locale, the time delay for law enforcement to get to your location could take minutes or even up to an hour. And once law enforcement shows up, you have to assume they are competent in your exact emergency, at that exact time. While there are law enforcement officers that are very competent in areas of creating or stopping violence, the sad fact is that there are also many who are not.

zach bush

A better way of thinking of this is to think of the person you would want to show up to help you during your emergency. Think of all the qualities you want that person to possess, and slowly work within yourself to be that person. If that means you need to work on fitness, combatives, or medical training, seek out that training and be that person!

This idea was first explained to me by Jay Gibson, who I consider to be a subject matter expert on areas of mindset, and I couldn’t think of it to be a better explanation for this question.

8. If you could only choose one home defense firearm, what would it be, and what would you have on it?

Zach Bush (Definitive Training Solutions): Assuming this question refers to a firearm that stays in your home, my answer would be a 12 ga shotgun. For you, the answer might be different, but a rifle or shotgun should be your answer.

In my living situation in typical suburbia, a shotgun makes sense. A rifle would be better suited if you live in a more open space where longer engagements are probable.

9. Being that many people coming to my site are into health and fitness, in your opinion, how important is health and fitness to survival and tactics?

Zach Bush (Definitive Training Solutions): Health and fitness are absolutely critical to winning, not only in a violent encounter but life in general. Personally, I am a fan of strength training. Being strong makes you better at everything and, in general, makes you harder to kill.

Not to disparage one workout style over another, but I have seen benefits with strength training that far surpass other styles of working out.
