A Bodybuilding.com & Remix Nutrition Collaboration with Hostess?
Surprise surprise! If you have been following my content, you know how much I LOVE when brands do collaborations. I’ve written about them in the past and you can bet I’ll bring them up again in the future. That being said, the latest collaboration actually surprised me quite a bit. Why? Because it involves Bodybuilding.com (Remix Nutrition) and Hostess.
These two brands need no introduction as they are both HUGE brands with millions in sales in their respective markets, however, it’s been unfortunate over the years that Bodybuilding.com has seemed to be on a downward spiral. What was once the leader in the industry for online supplement sales has changed hands multiple times in different acquisitions but has never seemed to right the ship from being somewhat lost at sea in treacherous.
Companies like Amazon and Tiger Fitness have been chipping away steadily at the Bodybuilding.com market share. They needed to do something (quickly) to try and stop the bleeding.

Can Collaborations Such as with Hostess Help Bodybuilding.com?
I’m not sure what it will take to bring back Bodybuilding.com to the days when it was run by Ryan Deluca, but if I were him, I’d be extremely disappointed in the results (or lack thereof) over the years following his exit. Maybe some insight from Josh Schall is needed (if he hasn’t published content on the subject already).
While I don’t think the collaboration Bodybuilding.com signed with Hostess is a bad idea, I’m just not sure if it’s going to be enough to move the needle. Personally, I love the idea. Anything that changes and adds new flavors to products gets a thumbs up from my perspective. And without even trying the product, I’m excited to see how it does for both brands.

Hostess is known for their (unhealthy) snack items that will leave you wanting to devour the entire box in one sitting. Add that to a protein powder and (if it tastes like the real thing) should be an absolute hit.
Bodybuilding.com launched their own line of products several moons ago with the staple pre-workouts, intra-workouts, protein powders, and even protein bars. While their products did fairly well on their site, there was never anything “exciting” about the line. With the collaboration between Bodybuilding.com and Hostess, customers may finally have something to get excited about.
Is Naming the New Brand “Remix Nutrition” Enough?
If you look on the Bodybuilding.com website, you’ll see their Signature Series line of products. The label donned the Bodybuilding.com logo and there was no question who made the product. This new brand (from what I can see) does not appear to have any Bodybuilding.com logos on its packaging, yet resembles the existing line with the same family of colors (light blue and white).
As you’d imagine, the Remix Nutrition line of products (for the time being at least) is exclusive to the Bodybuilding.com website. Will this bring a new wave of consumers? I think so. Will it entice existing customers to give it a try? Sure. Is it enough to help the decreasing yearly revenue for the brand? Eh, let’s pump the brakes for a minute and not get ahead of ourselves.
You really can’t knock the formula of the Remix Nutrition protein powder. You’re looking at 140 calories, 3g of fat, 5g of carbohydrates, 1g of sugar, and 24g of protein coming from whey protein concentrate, milk protein isolate, whey protein isolate, micellar casein, and egg albumin powder). Overall, it’s a good blend of protein sources. The fats are primarily coming from MCTs which is also a plus and will provide consumers with some healthy fats while also helping to improve the flavor profile.
One thing I wish they, along with every brand, would do is to stop using colors in their products. I understand that creating a protein shake that when you mix it up it looks good, but more and more consumers are preferring that they are left out (myself included). It’s time to listen to the consumers and work through these issues.
As it stands right now, the Bodybuilding.com Remix Nutrition brand launched two Hostess flavors — the ever-famous Twinkies and Chocolate CupCakes. Again, since I haven’t tried them myself, I can only assume they taste like the real thing. I’d be shocked if Hostess would put their name on a product that didn’t taste just like their snacks. Bodybuilding.com had to have worked with the team over at Hostess to nail the flavor systems.
There is word that Bodybuilding.com and Hostess are already in talks about the next launch of flavors as well which will leave mouths watering. When you think of the rest of the Hostess portfolio, in addition to the already launched flavors, Hostess has Sno Balls, Ding Dongs, and Donettes. Will some of the flavors overlap such as the Ding Dongs and Chocolate CupCakes? Maybe, but I’d be willing to give them a ride and try them myself.
Will People Buy This Remix Nutrition Protein?
I absolutely believe these protein flavors will move for Bodybuilding.com, Remix Nutrition, and the Hostess brand. I mean, who wouldn’t love to drink a shake that tastes like Twinkies or Chocolate CupCakes? My hand is raised. And maybe this is even a strategic move for Bodybuilding.com where they are looking to sell off the Remix Nutrition brand down the road?
Would Hostess have been better off working on the collaboration with another brand instead of Remix Nutrition? My personal opinion is yes. But bravo to Bodybuilding.com for securing the deal. I’m willing to bet other brands would have paid more for the collaboration but it’s already in the books so kudos to Bodybuilding.com for moving quickly (why didn’t anyone think of it sooner?).
I guess the only question left to ask is, “Will you be purchasing these Remix Nutrition 2lb tubs of protein?” Do you think it was a good idea for Bodybuilding.com and Hostess to team up and work on a collaboration together? Is there a bigger play here where Bodybuilding.com sweetened the deal by offering Hostess some advertising space on their site to secure the deal knowing the banners would get a ton of eyeballs on them? Who knows? I’m not sure how that would help Hostess as the people going to the Bodybuilding.com site probably aren’t consumers of their products. But overall, I’m happy for both brands and hope this is a huge success for all parties involved.
