Rebuilding Big Ramy – What’s Next for This Giant?
I’ve always been a fan of Big Ramy, but at this years Olympia, I was left scratching my head. Big Ramy is literally the biggest competitor on the stage, yet, it appears he has something stuck in his head that he needs to keep every little bit of that size when he competes. In 2017, I thought Big Ramy looked his best ever. He came in a little smaller (which was still humongous), but his conditioning was amazing. I figured that he would springboard off of that look and further understand how to dial things in to compete with Phil. That wasn’t the case. So, where does Big Ramy go from here?
Back to the Drawing Board for Big Ramy?
I’m not here to dissect every little inch of Big Ramy, I don’t have that kind of time for his colossal frame. However, I think it is safe to say that Big Ramy seems to be in limbo with what look he wants to bring to the stage. Now, this could also be something that the Camel Crew over in Kuwait is pushing him towards as well, we don’t know. However, it’s my opinion that Ramy doesn’t need to get any bigger. If he can dial it back and NAIL his conditioning, it’s lights out for many competitors – including Phil Heath.
Phil again this year did not look his best and it opened the door for competitors to walk through. His abdomen, even after surgery, was not good. He couldn’t hold his stomach in during transitions, and overall, he just looked exhausted. This was Big Ramy’s chance to prove that he’s the best in the world, but he didn’t. In fact, he actually apologized on Instagram for his conditioning. Maybe this was the reason why he was so quiet this entire prep?
On IG, Big Ramy said he was sorry for disappointing his fans and said he did everything he could to bring his best package and followed – which raises the question to me if the Camel Crew is the best fit for him. Personally, I think he needs to get back with Chris Aceto to dial things in.
Prejudging was horrific for Big Ramy, but luckily, he tightened things up for Saturday night. Unfortunately, the damage was already done and it took Big Ramy out of the top 5. If Big Ramy can regroup, have a productive off-season, and bring better conditioning in 2019, maybe, just maybe, it will be the year of the Ramy. But, with his inconsistencies over the years, I’m not holding my breath that he can figure things out (with any coach) and be happy with what they tell him he needs to do. Because at this point, I can’t believe anyone is telling him he needs to get bigger. Conditioning has always been his weakness and that’s the difference between first place and sixth.
