How Are You Doing on With Your New Year Goals?
We are just about through January and with so many people putting together new year goals, I figured now would be the perfect time to evaluate where you stand. How are things going? Are you still on track or did you fall off the wagon? You see, too many people come into a new year with lofty goals, but they never truly understand how to set their goals or even a strategy of how to measure their progress.
I’ve spent years working with clients to help them achieve their health and fitness goals. Lately, I’ve been mentoring some business owners to help them reach their new year goals for sales. If I said setting goals was difficult, I’d be lying to you. It’s actually quite simple once you get the ball rolling and it gives you a clear and precise plan to follow and measure along the way. It provides you with actionable steps to move closer to your end goal.
With a few simple steps in place, you can achieve anything (ok, almost anything — let’s be realistic here). Which brings up another good point… your new year goals (or any goals) need to be realistic. Sure, I’d like to set a goal that I drop down to 6% body fat in a week, or that I want to reach a million dollars in revenue this year, but those simply aren’t realistic (at least not at this time).

Why Do You Need New Year Goals?
Setting New Year goals can be beneficial for several reasons:
- Direction and Focus: Goals provide a sense of direction and focus for the upcoming year. They give you a clear purpose and help you prioritize what’s important.
- Motivation: Having specific goals can be a source of motivation. They give you something to work towards and can help you stay committed to personal or professional growth.
- Measurement of Progress: Goals provide a benchmark for measuring your progress. They allow you to track your achievements and see how far you’ve come.
- Personal Development: Setting New Year goals encourages personal development. Whether they’re related to career advancement, health, relationships, or learning new skills, goals push you to improve yourself.
- Time Management: Goals help in effective time management. When you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve, you can allocate your time and resources more efficiently.
- Sense of Accomplishment: Achieving your New Year goals gives you a sense of accomplishment and boosts your confidence. It reinforces the idea that you can overcome challenges and succeed.
- Adaptability: Goals can be adjusted or modified as circumstances change. They provide a framework that allows you to adapt to new situations while still working towards your overarching objectives.
Remember that goals should be realistic, measurable, and aligned with your values. They should inspire and challenge you, but also be attainable within a reasonable timeframe.
Why Do So Many People Give Up?
People may give up on their New Year goals for various reasons, and it’s important to recognize that setbacks and challenges are a natural part of the goal-setting process. Here are some common reasons why people might give up:
- Lack of Clarity: Unclear or vague New Year goals can make it difficult for individuals to stay motivated. If the objectives are not well-defined, it’s easier to lose focus and interest.
- Unrealistic Expectations: Setting overly ambitious or unrealistic goals can lead to frustration and disappointment. It’s crucial to set achievable targets to maintain motivation.
- Lack of Motivation: If the initial motivation for setting a New Year goal diminishes, individuals may struggle to stay committed. Reconnecting with the reasons behind the goal can help reignite motivation.
- Fear of Failure: The fear of failure can be a powerful demotivator. Some people may avoid pursuing their goals to sidestep the possibility of not succeeding.
- Poor Planning: Inadequate planning and lack of a clear action plan can make it challenging to make progress. Breaking down goals into smaller, manageable tasks can help prevent overwhelm.
- External Pressures: External factors such as societal expectations, peer pressure, or family obligations can contribute to giving up on personal goals if they conflict with these external pressures.
- Lack of Support: A lack of support from friends, family, or a social network can make it harder for individuals to persevere. Encouragement and understanding from others can play a significant role in achieving goals.
- Burnout: Overcommitting or pushing oneself too hard without adequate rest can lead to burnout. It’s essential to find a balance between pursuing goals and taking care of one’s well-being.
- Change in Priorities: Life circumstances and priorities can change over time. A shift in values or goals may lead individuals to reconsider and redirect their efforts.
- Negative Self-Talk: Negative self-talk and self-doubt can undermine confidence and resilience. Building a positive mindset and addressing self-limiting beliefs can be crucial for goal attainment.
