Ka-Bar TDI: A Last Ditch “Get Off Me” Blade for Self-Defense
There seems to be a love/hate relationship with the Ka-Bar TDI — or, better yet, fixed blades in general. Some say you shouldn’t carry a fixed blade, while others argue that a folding knife doesn’t provide the same durability.
Is someone right and someone wrong? No. I don’t think so. I think it comes down to personal preference. And when it comes to blades, I’m a big fan.
Granted, I’m not about to bring a knife to a gunfight. If the scenario arises where my life is in danger, I’m not about to morph into a ninja and start slicing and dicing people, I carry a firearm to stop those types of threats.
But what if I can’t get to my firearm, such as I find myself in a grappling match with a threat? Well, I may need to use something like the Ka-Bar TDI in such an instance.
Does that mean when I need to open a package, I’m going to whip out my Ka-Bar TDI? No. I have a folder for that. But I will preface this by saying I have a few different fixed blades that fit into my everyday rotation (such as carrying the Shivworks Clinch Pick).
Fixed blades like the Ka-Bar TDI have very specific roles and uses. Understanding such is half the battle in gaining the knowledge of why you may want to carry one (or not).
