Content Writer vs Supplement Copywriter: Who Do You Need?

First things first, while both bang away at their keyboard, one is fairly generic while the other is extremely specific and niche. When you look at a content writer, they can write about various topics — one of which can obviously be supplements. A content writer will be a great asset if you are looking to build content on your website (such as a blog section) to help educate your customers as well as potential new customers. A supplement copywriter, on the other hand, is a specific individual who helps turn words into cash. Sounds good, right?

Let’s take a little deeper dive into each so you have a better idea of exactly who you are looking for based on your needs for a content writer or supplement copywriter.

Why Should You Hire a Content Writer?

When you think of content you probably envision a whole bunch of text on a website. Blogs, articles, and similar. And you’d be correct. The reason for using a content writer is to inform and educate. Plain and simple.

A content writer is great for projects where you may have a new ingredient or a new product and you want a piece written about it to help inform people what it is, what it does, how it works, and even the research behind it.

Within the piece of content, it’s always a good idea to have some sort of call-to-action (CTA). A good content writer will make sure to include this somewhere in the piece. This can help build awareness as well as traffic to your website. Remember, you get what you pay for with writers. If you think you’re going to spend $5 on Fiverr and get an experienced content writer or supplement copywriter, you’re mistaken.

One thing you should be made aware of is how to properly utilize the piece you pay for. A content writer will be paid for the piece they write for you just like a supplement copywriter would. It’s your job to use it to the fullest. What I mean by this is have an omnichannel approach to the piece of content. If the piece you have created is for your blog, simply putting it up on your website may be good enough if the content writer utilizes SEO strategies to help get eyeballs on it from a Google SERP perspective. However, shouldn’t you want MORE? Of course, you do.

This omnichannel approach that I’m mentioning comes down to leveraging as many channels as you have available at your disposal. That means putting it up on all your social platforms as a teaser that grabs attention and redirects people over to your website to finish reading the content. From there, you have the ability to convert sales. Or record yourself reading the article and turn it into a podcast and put it out via RSS feed for podcasters to listen to. You can even take that single content piece one step further by having someone discuss what is said in the article on video and upload it to YouTube.

As you can see, from a single content piece, you can turn it into several and hit various channels where your audience may be. That being said, depending on who you hire as your content writer, he or she may be able to also create the audio and visual aspect of the content piece for you as well for an added fee.

Hiring a content writer is a great strategy to help build your business, educate your customers, and help build your authority in your space. But do you need a supplement copywriter instead?

Why Should You Hire a Supplement Copywriter?

A supplement copywriter is a rare breed. Think of them as a unicorn. It’s someone who speaks your language and a language your customers resonate with. They don’t think big in terms of writing for every business under the sun. Rather, they niche themselves down to be extremely specific at what they do. You’re going to pay more for a supplement copywriter but at the same time, the return on investment (ROI) also tends to be MUCH higher.

The job of a supplement copywriter is to compel people to buy, take action, and/or generate a lead for you. A good supplement copywriter is capable of writing in such a way that their words alone are able to persuade and influence. As mentioned above, they specialize in turning words into cash.

Copywriting is a powerful skill and for that reason, it’s recommended to outsource any copywriting you may need to be done for your business. Every company needs a good copywriter — regardless of the industry. A supplement copywriter can produce page copy for your website, ad copy, product label copy, sell sheets, social media posts, and more.

Let me give you an example of copywriting gone wrong. A startup brand decided to fulfill their copy needs in-house (which they have every right to do). However, their copy was written in such a way on their product page that it did not resonate with their audience and did not help translate into sales. After months, they finally hired a professional supplement copywriter to look at their copy and made the necessary changes to improve the piece of copy. After the first week, they made more sales than in the previous three months.

Who did they hire? Me.

It’s OK to Outsource a Content Writer or Supplement Copywriter and it Won’t Cost You an Arm and a Leg

I wrote the above with a smile on my face knowing that I’ve done all of those things for my clients and then some. Supplement companies from around the globe trust me to write their content and copy to help build their sales and traffic. A skilled and experienced supplement copywriter who has been in the industry for more than two decades can be an incredible asset to your brand.

As with most things in business, investing in the right areas can completely transform your business. While content and copy are an investment in your business, the return is more than worth it. Just think… what if you could have a piece of copy written from a supplement copywriter for a given amount and make all of that money back in less than seven days? It would be worth the investment in the supplement copywriter, right? After those seven days it’s pure profit if you’re looking at it from an investment standpoint.

If you don’t want to hire someone in-house (there are benefits to not doing this), consider hiring a remote copywriter.

So, where do you start? First, figure out what your needs are. What do you want to focus on? Write everything down. Then, reach out to a professional content writer or supplement copywriter such as myself or someone else and explain exactly what your needs are and what result you’re trying to achieve. Strategize together and figure out the best plan of attack moving forward. Agree to terms and you’re off to the races. It’s that simple.
