College Is a Waste of Time and Money? Let’s Discuss.

For those of you who have gone to college, are you currently using every bit of information you learned there?  Are you happy with the choice you made?  When speaking with college graduates, many of them are pissed off.  Not only because their piece of paper they received after graduation still hasn’t helped them get a job, but also because they are going to be living off canned soup due to the debt they’ve accumulated.  So, college is a waste of time and money?  Let’s discuss.

Now let me say something before your head explodes and you go to your parents saying college is a waste of time and money.  Or, maybe you’re a parent thinking your child shouldn’t read this.  Regardless, hear me out.

Unless you are going into a specialty field that requires deep knowledge about a subject matter, most definitely college is a waste of time and money.  Specialty careers would include being a doctor, surgeon, lawyer, dentist, and similar.  You don’t need a college degree to go work retail or in a machine shop.  We have been programmed and told that if you want to make it in life, you need a college degree.  Honestly, that’s complete bullshit and I’m not going to sugar coat it.  Maybe 10 years ago it was important, but today, not so much.  You can learn way more and be more specific on the things you learn by picking up books, taking online courses, or simply through on the job training if it’s given – all of which won’t cost you anywhere near what a college degree would.

Why I believe college is a waste of time and money

Let’s break things down and have a better understanding.  If you aren’t going into a specialty field or career, why would you want to start your professional career deep in debt?  I’m not talking about a $5,000 credit card balance that you need to pay down.  I’m talking about a six-figure bill that becomes a noose around your neck for a good part of your life.

So, let me get this straight and we can figure out if these numbers make sense.  You go to college and rack up a six-figure amount of debt.  You graduate and then need a place to live so you take out a loan to buy a house (even more debt).  You need a form of transportation so you take out a loan to purchase a car.  You then spend potentially months trying to find a job with this amazing new piece of paper you carry around – called a diploma.  How’s that working out for you?

You take a job in the field you are working and find out 90% of the things you were taught in college doesn’t pertain to your new profession and career.  Congratulations!  Have fun paying off all that debt that you accumulated for nothing.  College is a waste of time and money.  You spent 4+ years getting your degree when you could have been out working those four years gaining experience and on the job training while collecting income and building your savings and retirement.

When you take a job these days, the company trains you to perform a certain way.  They have processes and systems in place to ensure everyone knows exactly how to complete a job or task.  So, what exactly did your college degree do if your employer is dictating how you do something to their specifications?  All that money you spent on chemistry, calculus, bread making, and other worthless courses are for nothing.

You went to college to prepare yourself for your future, right?  Then why are colleges teaching you worthless information that you will never use in the real world?  Oh, that’s right… Because they WANT YOUR MONEY.  It’s greed.  And colleges are soon going to realize that when Americans FINALLY understand that college is a waste of time and money, less and less people will be enrolling in their establishment.  College is too damn expensive these days.  It’s completely absurd!

And have you seen those new “entrepreneurship” degrees?  What a joke!  Either you have an entrepreneur’s mindset or you don’t.  You need to be taught how to be an entrepreneur by someone who has never owned their own business nor created something that solved a problem?  It’s the same thing with business.  I graduated with a degree in kinesiology and a minor in business.  Today, I own my own business and haven’t used anything from my business minor.  I’ve learned more DOING IT than I ever did learning about it sitting in a college classroom.

What is the right choice for you?

I, unfortunately, can’t answer that for you.  But, don’t feel pressured to go to college because people tell you “it’s the right thing to do.”  Don’t stack up all that debt which you’ll be paying off for the next several decades if you don’t plan on going into a specialty career where it makes sense.  You run your own life.

Look, if you skip college and later realize that you should have gone, you can always enroll.  But, if you go to college and find out I’m right and that college is a waste of time and money, you’ll never be able to get either of those things back or ask for a refund – it doesn’t work that way.

Everything in this article is my own opinion based off of what I see, saw first-hand, and hear from others on both sides of the debate.  When it comes down to it, though, the choice is yours.
