Best Home Gym Equipment When You Have Limited Space
For me, the best investment I’ve ever made was in my health. As a trainer, I’ve always wanted an extensive home gym. I saw tremendous value in never needing to leave the house to exercise which gives me no excuse why I shouldn’t be getting in my workouts. With that being said, I don’t expect people to mirror my passion and spend thousands of dollars to fill up a basement full of gym equipment. For that reason, I wanted to create an article that covered the best home gym equipment when you have limited space.

This article will cover some key pieces of home gym equipment that I feel (based on my opinion) are the best bang for the buck. They provide a solution to limited space at a reasonable price.

The Best Home Gym Equipment to Purchase for Your Home
Something to take into consideration is that you don’t NEED all of the equipment shown below. The pieces below are just my opinion on some of the best out there when looking for the best home gym equipment that doesn’t take up a ton of space. Whether you are planning on making part of your basement into your home gym area, or part of the garage, or even a corner of the room, decide which (if any) of the below fits your wants and needs.
1. Bodylastic Resistance Band Set
This could quite possibly be THE BEST piece of home gym equipment you can purchase when space is limited and you want a ton of uses for a single item. If you follow my content, you would know I am a HUGE fan of people investing in a Bodylastic Resistance Band Set. They have a wide variety, but they all serve the same purpose – to allow you to get a full body workout with minimal equipment in a small space.
Each set comes with multiple resistance bands, a bag to carry and store everything in, and several attachments to be used with closed doors and hands/ankles. Many resistance bands on the market have handles that are permanently attached. With the Bodylastic, you are able to change out the attachments which make them very versatile. With the included bag, you can take your resistance bands with you on vacations and business trips so you never have to miss out on a workout. I recommend these to every single one of my clients so they have an at-home option to do a resistance band workout.
2. Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells
If you wanted to take your home gym equipment to the next level and upgrade from resistance bands, you could always invest in something like the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells. You essentially get multiple pairs of dumbbells in one tiny little package. They take up next to no room at all and can be stored in a corner, closet, or under a bed.
Now, if you’re extremely strong, these may not be the best option for you as the weight goes from 5 lbs to 52.5 lbs in 2.5 lb increments. Essentially, they are adjustable dumbbells. While I don’t see anything wrong with this, if your benching 315 currently, other than working on endurance, you won’t get much out of these from a strength and hypertrophy standpoint. However, if you’re just getting into fitness or have been working your way up in strength, these are a great option to get in full-body workouts right at home.
3. ProsourceFit Multi-Grip Pull-Up Bar
If you have a doorway, you have a place to exercise. This doorway piece of home gym equipment can easily be put up and taken down as needed. You’ll be able to hit your upper body from various angles due to the 12 various grip positions. You can do many different versions of pull-ups and chin-ups to work the entire back as well as hanging ab exercises. Then, take it off the doorway and place it on the floor to hit the chest with some push-up variations and dips for the triceps.
With the ProsourceFit Multi-Grip Pull-Up Bar, you can fit in a great home workout and when you’re all done, toss the bar under a bed or in a closet out of sight. This piece of home gym equipment is made extremely well and is very inexpensive.
4. Body-Solid Power Rack
You can say things are getting pretty serious when you start looking at power racks. But, if you’re a hardcore lifter and want something for at home, a power rack is a great piece of home gym equipment not only because of its versatility but also because it’s made to provide users with a safe place to do various lifts such as bench, incline, decline, shoulder press, squat, deadlift, rows, and many more.
The Body-Solid Power Rack is a great option and can handle up to 600 pounds safely. If you need something a little more heavy duty, they do have some that go up to 800 pounds and higher. However, this one is a great starting point for most and also provides a chin-up bar as well. There are 18 adjustment levels and two heat-tempered lift-offs to help elevate the bar to a starting point of your choice based on the exercise you are looking to perform as well as safety bars to ensure you don’t get pinned under the bar when they are being used correctly.

5. Body-Solid Adjustable Weight Bench
Whether you have a power rack or not, you could always invest in a weight bench to allow for more exercise variation. The Body-Solid Adjustable Weight Bench is a fantastic option for those looking to pick up a new piece of home gym equipment but not break the bank by investing in a super high-tech weight bench that has all the bells and whistles. And in all honesty, you don’t need a super fancy bench.
What you want to look for is an adjustable bench that has a good variation of angles ranging from incline, flat, and decline. This particular bench is a great starting point assuming you don’t need something that will hold a ton of weight. This adjustable bench can handle up to a 500-pound capacity with its seven various adjustment positions. What’s even better is that not only is there no assembly required, but the bench also folds flat so you can slide it under a bed, rest it up against the wall in a corner, or place it in a closet.
6. CAP 300-Pound Barbell and Weight Set
If you want to go the route of having a power rack as part of your home gym equipment, you’re going to need a barbell as well as some plates. One of the best things I can recommend is to purchase something like the CAP 300-pound barbell and weight set. I actually purchased a few of these because, for the value, it’s hard to beat it for the price.
You get a standard Olympic barbell, two 45-pound plates, two 35-pound plates, two 25-pound plates, two 10-pound plates, four 5-pound plates, two 2.5-pound plates, and two spring clip collars. The barbell is capable of handling up to 500 pounds which should suit most of your home gym needs. If you are planning on going heavier, you’ll simply need to invest in a heavier-capacity barbell.
7. Stability Ball
When it comes to stability balls, the one thing I recommend is that you get an anti-burst ball. The brand itself isn’t as important, in my opinion, but a stability ball is one of the best pieces of home gym equipment you can purchase as it has many uses. While a stability ball can take up some floor space, the nice thing is that you can also use it as a seat if guests come over or even as an office chair to work on your core and posture while you do some work from home. You can use the stability ball for various exercises not only for the core but also when using resistance bands or dumbbells.
Stability balls come in various sizes. Make sure you get a ball that is for your height so that you can use it properly and safely.
8. Valeo Jump Rope
When you don’t have a lot of space, cardio equipment is generally going to be a no-go unless you accept the fact that it’s going to take up some space in your home. Personally, I feel as if you don’t need any cardio equipment as there are many things you can do to raise your heart rate and burn calories while improving your heart health as well. You can do things like burpees, jumping jacks, walking the stairs in your home, walking outside, running, riding a bicycle, going for a hike, etc.
However, if you want to invest in something that literally takes up no room at all and is under $5, it’s hard to beat a jump rope. The Valeo jump rope is a great and extremely effective form of cardio that will certainly get your heart rate elevated. The only caveat is that you need enough free space around you so that you don’t hit anything. Also, keep into consideration the height of your ceiling. Worst case scenario, you can take the jump rope into the garage or outside to work up a good sweat and make those fat cells cry.
